Football season has started, when should the ref blow the whistle?

19th Aug 2024

Yippee, the football season has started and with my team now languishing in League One with the minnows, I am desperate for some favourable decisions by officials.

After last season, even fair decisions would be good. I’d like the same for our industry too if I am honest.

Last week, the Competition and Markets Authority concluded their investigation into a boiler manufacturer. In their press release on the findings, the CMA stressed their desire to avoid “false impressions being given” – now that’s fair enough even if on the subjective side. They were also directly quoted as saying:- “With people increasingly concerned about their impact on the environment and the cost of bills, it is vital that consumers can make well-informed decisions.”

Again, I have no problem with that statement, indeed it is something EUA has been championing for years, but like my footy team it seems the officials have turned a blind eye to what others are doing on the pitch.

Here are some claims made this week on my Facebook page by a company called ‘Electric Boiler Quotes’:-

Gas boilers are claimed to be complex to install; are less energy efficient; noisy to operate; have variable running costs whereas electric boilers (not heat pumps) are easy to install; highly energy efficient; quiet to operate and have lower running costs. All highly dubious claims (that’s me being polite instead of saying a ‘pack of lies’). When a consumer challenged the company on Facebook, the company justified their claims by saying, “with new legislation and the phasing out of gas, people will be looking to make the change early.” With government pushing renewable energy “it is only a matter of time until electricity prices come down. Subsequently, gas will likely go up as we get closer to 2030.”

Yes, those are the exact words. Yes, my blood does boil. I’m used to seeing such outlandish claims but I expect officials to police fairly. I have reported these claims to the CMA but no reply as yet. When will the ref blow the whistle on real fouls committed against customers?
